By Bus & Rail Services
Ireland has a good network of both bus and rail services. Bus Eireann [www.buseireann.ie] and Irish Rail [www.irishrail.ie] service the Republic, while Ulster Bus and Northern Ireland Railways service Northern Ireland [www.translink.co.uk].
The DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) [www.irishrail.ie/dart/] serves the Dublin area from Howth and Malahide in North County Dublin via Dun Laoghaire in South County Dublin to Greystones in County Wicklow. Dublin Bus [www.dublinbus.ie] also services the Republic's captial city.
Also serving Dublin City since 2004 is the new light rail tram system known as Luas [www.luas.ie], which provides a convenient mode of transport around the Republic’s capital for tourists. The service consists of two lines, the Red Line and Green Line, with trams running every 5 to 15 minutes.
In Belfast, the Belfast City Bus, Ulster Bus and Northern Ireland Railways will ensure that you can make your way around the city with ease. Details of all these services can be located at www.translink.co.uk
Special deals! Visitors travelling around Ireland by public transport should always enquire about special discounted fares or Emerald Card/Irish Rover tickets, which offer unlimited bus/rail travel for three, five or 15 days.
Driving
Hire car is another attractive alternative to discovering the island of Ireland allowing for optimal freedom in personalizing your own itinerary. Visitors to Ireland should be in possession of either a full valid national driving licence or an international driving permit issued abroad. These are readily available from motoring organisations in the country of origin.
Taxis
There are metered taxis in Belfast, Cork, Dublin, Galway and Limerick, but in other areas you’ll have to agree on the fare beforehand.
In Belfast and Londonderry there are share-taxi services, which operate rather like a mini-bus.
