Equestrian

Ireland’s horses have a worldwide reputation for excellence – and it’s all in the bones! The country’s legendary emerald pastures are rich in calcium and produce horses with strong, light bones – the finest in Europe.

Known as The Land of the Horse, Ireland is packed with equine adventures for everyone from the first timer to the accomplished rider. Excellent facilities, a buzzing equestrian scene and scenery means that a riding holiday in Ireland is an experience to be cherished.

Horse racing

If you don’t relish the thought of riding on horseback, then you can always enjoy Ireland’s equine treasures from the ground. Irish race meetings buzz with the beat of pounding hooves and provide a wonderful day out for families and horse enthusiasts alike.

Horseracing in Ireland is known as “the sport of kings”, and with good reason, too. In Celtic times, the law of the time dictated that it should be limited to princes and noblemen. Today, however, the sport is enjoyed by all, and a couple of our recommended racecourses to visit include:

1.    Listowel in County Kerry is one of the oldest racecourses in the country with a lively atmosphere full of family fun and is renowned for its week-long race meeting.
2.      Laytown in County Louth is where the racing takes place on the hard sands of Laytown Beach and provides a unique spectacle you can't afford to miss.
3.      Downpatrick Racecourse in County Down, Northern Ireland pulsates with atmosphere and is the ideal spot to indulge in a flutter should you be so inclined. Lucky to some, throughout the day you'll be watched over by Ireland's patron Saint Patrick, who’s buried at the nearby Down Cathedral!
